Crazy Eights: A Step-by-Step Guide (or Crazy 8s)
My husband and I like playing board games or card games now that our boys are sleeping through the night. Our current favorite game is Monopoly, but we started our habit by playing Crazy Eights.
If you’re unfamiliar with Crazy Eights (or Crazy 8s), it’s a game similar to Uno in which you stack colors and numbers to attain your goal. This game is ideal for days when it’s too hot or rainy to go outside and everyone is confined in the house together throughout the summer. There are numerous versions of this game, as there are with most card games, but this is how we play it at our house.
The Game’s Main Objective
Every game begins with the players selecting a number to which they wish to play. We play to 500 for a long game and 250 for a quick game. If you want, you can stretch the game by increasing the number—though we’ve never gone past 500.
The goal of the game is to be the last person standing by scoring the fewest points and avoiding being eliminated by scoring 250/500 points or more.
What You’ll Need for the Game
● A deck of cards (two if playing with more than five players; 3 if playing with more than ten players, etc.)
● Pen
● Paper
● (optional) Calculator
How to Get Ready for the Match
1. To keep track of the score, the dealer writes each player’s initials or nicknames at the top of the piece of paper.
2. The dealer shuffles the deck before handing out eight cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed in the center, face down.
3. The dealer then takes the top card from the deck and lays it face up beside the rest of the deck.
