Page numbers can be used to number each page in your document automatically. They are available in a variety of numerical forms and can be adjusted to meet your specific requirements. The header, footer, or side margin are frequently where page numbers are placed. Word allows you to restart page numbering if you need to number some pages differently.
To add page numbers:
Page numbers can be automatically added to each page and placed in the header, footer, or side margin by Word. If you have a header or footer already in place, it will be removed and replaced with the page number.
- Select the Page Number command from the Insert tab.
- Select the preferred style of header from the Top of Page, Bottom of Page, or Page Margins menu, depending on where you want the page number to appear.
- A page numbering system will be displayed.
- To lock the header and footer, press the Esc key.
- Double-click the header or footer to unlock it and make any necessary changes to the page numbers.
To add page numbers to an existing header or footer, follow these instructions:
If you have an existing header or footer and want to add a page number, Word includes a feature that will automatically insert the page number into the existing header or footer. In this example, we’ll number the pages in our document’s header.
- To unlock the header or footer, double-click anywhere on it.
- Select the Page Number command from the Design tab. Hover the mouse over Current Position in the pop-up menu and select the desired page numbering style.
- There will be page numbering.
- Press the Esc key when you’re finished.
