Materials:
- Dish soap, 10 mL
- 100 milliliters of warm water
- white vinegar (400 mL)
- Colored food
- Slurry made with baking soda (fill a cup halfway with baking soda, then fill the rest with water)
- 2 liter soda bottle, empty
Instructions:
NOTE: Due to the mess, this should be done outside.
- In an empty soda bottle, combine the vinegar, water, dish soap, and two drops of food coloring.
- Mix the baking soda slurry with a spoon until it is completely liquid.
- It’s time for an eruption! … Step back and quickly pour the baking soda slurry into the soda bottle.
How it Works:
When vinegar and baking soda combine chemically, carbon dioxide is produced. Carbon dioxide is the same gas that gives sodas their carbonation. What happens if you give a drink a good shake? The gas becomes enthralled and tries to disperse. Because there isn’t enough area in the bottle for the gas to spread out, it rushes out the opening, triggering an explosion!
