Online Passport Application: A Step-by-Step Guide
With the arrival of the information age, the days of obtaining a passport being viewed as a difficult undertaking are long gone. You can now apply for a passport online and avoid standing in line. You might not bother shedding a few notes to the passport agent on a busy day to avoid this inconvenience. However, changes in protocol across the country have made the process a lot easier. This website, http://passportindia.gov.in, now allows you to apply for a passport online.
The following are the steps for applying for a passport online:
- Click the “Register Now” link at http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink.
- Fill in all required asterisk (*) fields according to the instructions. Please choose the passport office that is closest to your current address. Once you’ve completed the entry, click “Register” to complete the registration process.
- Look for an email from “passport.admin@passportindia.gov.in” in your inbox, open it, and click the link to activate your user account.
- On the activation screen, click here to login, or go to https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/user/userLogin and enter your registered login id, password, and the characters displayed.
- On your home screen, click the ‘Apply for a New Passport/Reissue of Passport’ option.
- Option 1: You can download a soft copy of the form, complete it offline, and then upload it.

- Option 2 – By clicking on the link provided on the website, you can fill in all of the essential details in the online application form under the heading Alternative 2. (Please note that an internet connection would be required when you opt for online application).
**Check your information twice, or three times if necessary, before submitting a form, whether offline or online.
- The following step is to pay for the application. To make an appointment, go to the Services screen and click the ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ option on the left side of the screen. Then, to make payment for an appointment, click on the ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ option.
- Payments for appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) are now required to be done online. Any of the following modes can be used to accomplish the same goal:
- Debit/Credit Card (MasterCard and Visa)
- Banking on the Internet (State Bank of India and Associate Banks Only)
- Bank Challan from SBI
- After you’ve completed the payment process, click the ‘Print Application Receipt’ option to get a copy of your application receipt. The PSK will require this application receipt. Place this receipt with the Application Reference Number/Appointment Number in front of your passport application file for easy reference.
