The Exam Pattern for the BPSC
The test follows the UPSC pattern in that there are three rounds of examination: preliminary, mains, and an interview.
Preliminary Exam for the BPSC
The BPSC preliminary examination is worth 150 points, and there is no negative marking. If you check prior-year BPSC exams, you’ll see that the paper’s difficulty level is a little lower than that of UPSC Prelims. The BPSC Prelims questions are all factual in nature. As a result, it is critical to review and memorize the syllabus’s topics.
The Fundamental Pillars of the BPSC Prelims
Examination are History of Modern India, General Science, Polity, India and International Current Affairs, General Knowledge of Bihar, and Current Affairs of Bihar. When we look at the breakdown of the 64th BPSC Prelims question paper, we can see that the sections stated above accounted for the majority of the questions.
64th Prelims Question Breakup

Polity | 12-15 |
Indian Economy | 2-4 |
General Science | 20-25 |

As can be seen from the above, we need to concentrate more on History, Current Affairs, General Science, and Bihar G.K. in Prelims A. History is the most popular subject among BPSC students.
A. History
The majority of the questions are from the fields of Modern and Medieval History. For attempting the BPSC Prelims questions, the NCERTs are always the finest source. Although, if we look at the questions from the previous year’s Prelims, we can see that the majority of the questions in History were taken directly from the Lucent G.K book.
Despite the fact that NCERT history books are required for BPSC. You can use Lucent G.K. to augment NCERT books once you’ve finished reading them.
Ancient History: Your attention in ancient history should be on the following topics:-
1) Buddhism and Jainism are both Buddhist and Jain religions. 2) Empire of Magadha 3) Empire of the Mauryans
Medieval History: The following themes should be covered in Medieval History:-
1) Muslim Invasion in Bihar 2) Mughal Period 3) Pala Dynasty
Modern History: The following subjects should be highlighted in Modern History:-
1) Bihar’s role in the independence struggle. This has been BPSC’s most popular topic throughout its history. 2)The role of Bihar from 1900 to 1947. 3) Kisan Sabha (Council of Farmers) 4) The Non-Cooperation Movement, the Quit India Movement, and Bihar’s role in the NCM and QIM
B. Geographical Information
For Geography, the NCERT book for classes XI and XII is sufficient. These books are used to generate questions. We recommend that you read both the NCERT Geography book and the Geography of Bihar from Bihar’s G.K book.
C. Polity
- Laxmikant’s Indian Polity is the greatest book for polity, not just for BPSC but for all higher competitive exams. This is the one book that all applicants adore equally.
Fundamental rights, D.P.S.P, Parliament, President, and Governor should receive the most attention.
D. Economics
BPSC does not ask Economics too many technical questions. The ideal book to read for BPSC is Lucent, which should be reinforced by the Bihar Economic Survey, which is produced every year by the Bihar Finance Department.
Questions from the Bihar Economic Survey were explicitly posed in prior year’s examinations. Economic Survey of Bihar for 2018-2019
Some of these inquiries include:
1) What is the road density in Bihar?
2)How much electricity is consumed per person in Bihar?
E. General Science
In the BPSC Prelims, this is the section with the highest score. The best source to read is NCERT books from 6th to 12th grade. This will need to be reinforced with Lucent G.K. Additionally, memorization of previous year’s UPSC General Science questions will be a game-changer. Because the essence of General Science questions is repeated. You need to purchase Sam Samayik Ghatna Chakra on General Science as a question bank.
F. Current Events
Current Affairs is primarily factual in nature, requiring you to reproduce what you have learned over the previous six months. For this reason, revision is the most effective strategy to achieve excellent grades. For the BPSC, Pratiyogita Darpan and a monthly magazine on current affairs are good resources. The Pratioyogita Darpan was directly asked questions. As a result, skipping it will cause you to miss the Mains exam.
G. Bihar G.K
There are numerous books available on Bihar G.K. Bihar Samagra, published by KBC Nano, and Imtiaz Ahmed’s book on Bihar are two examples. For Prelims, you can purchase Imtiaz Ahmed’s objective questions book.
H. Aptitude
This topic generates about ten queries. This is something you should practise from any excellent CSAT book. The questions are of a moderate difficulty level.
I. Previous year’s BPSC Prelims question papers will be helpful.
The Test Series is the final and most important element of BPSC Prelims preparation. This practise alone will significantly improve your BPSC score. You should enrol in a Test Series and begin giving Prelims test series when you have covered your material once.
Exam for the BPSC Mains
General Hindi, General Studies-1, General Studies-2, and Optional paper are the four papers in the BPSC Mains Exam.
- General Hindi
It’s merely a practise exam. Understanding Hindi grammar and practising essay writing are required for this.
- Paper 1: General Studies
This paper is broken into three portions, according to the syllabus. The following are some of them:-
India’s history and culture, as well as the ideas of Ravindra Nath Tagore, Gandhi, and Nehru.
Data interpretation, national and international current events
In the first segment, questions about the Pala dynasty, Mauryan arts, tribal movements, and Bihar’s role in the freedom fight are asked.
The level of questions was easy until the 63rd BPSC Mains, but starting with the 64th Mains, the examinee is asked to take an analytical approach to the problems.
The following questions from the 64th mains will help you comprehend the new trends:
- a) Explain what Mauryan art is and how it relates to Buddhism.
- b) How the Champaran movement represents a watershed moment in India’s liberation struggle history.
These types of questions necessitate an analytical approach and test the applicants’ entire understanding. These types of questions can be answered using NCERT and Bipin Chandra’s Indian Freedom Struggle book.
The IGNOU book might assist in coping with the syllabus’s ideas section.
P.S. In the 64th Mains paper, simply memorising the fact and presenting it in the paper failed miserably.
Reading the Hindu daily and taking notes on major occurrences will help you answer all of the questions in the second section. Trend analysis and guessing questions will be quite beneficial.
The following are some of the questions that were asked:
What is the National Research Council (N.R.C.)? What do you think G.S.T stands for?
Data Interpretation is the third section, and it is the most important element of G.S paper 1.
The attention should be on the flaws with the pie chart and bar chart. Many questions should be practised. Remember that a man becomes flawless via practise.
- Paper 2 (General Studies)
This section is also broken down into three sections:
I.Politics, II. Economics, and III. Science and Technology
In the first segment, the book Laxmikant is recommended for Polity, and the focus should be on Governors, Presidents, and Center-State Relations, among other topics. Bihar’s and India’s political developments should be closely observed. Because newspaper editorials cover a variety of relevant issues, they are useful for understanding and guessing questions.
Economics and geography should be read from NCERT and newspapers in the second segment. The questions posed in this area cover a wide range of topics. More emphasis should be placed on agricultural issues.
The paper’s third section includes questions about scientific development, the environment, and space technology, among other topics.
Newspaper editorials, Science magazines, and a TMH S&T book are all really useful. Climate change, renewable energy, water scarcity, and other issues should be prioritised.
Test Series and Answer Writing are two additional important aspects of Mains preparation. This practise alone will increase your ability to write answers and will assist you in keeping track of your preparation. After you’ve gone over your material once, enrol in a Test Series and begin practising answering questions.
Maintain a consistent level of preparation. Your best friends are consistent and hard working.
